Current Events Offer Fertile Ground for Fiction
According to a search on Google, George Orwell's Animal Farm is a satirical allegory that parodies the Russian Revolution and the rise of Stalinism, exploring themes of power, corruption, and the dangers of totalitarianism.
But I can’t stop comparing it to the current Animal Farm in the White House. However, there is an upside to all the terrible things happening. Think of all the movies, novels, short stories, plays, and poetry will result from the current overreaching and destructive misuse of power from the White House.
The current administration is made to order for satire and genres such as thriller, mystery, sci-fi, crime, suspense, tragedy, and horror. The possibilities are endless.
Here’s one. A horror or sci-fi novel called The Plague Years Return. With antivaxxers running amuck and the defunding of medical research and regulatory agencies leaving the sane worried about the safety of vaccines, we can expect more incidents of measles (already started), polio, smallpox, and other diseases.
The desperation of the many, many unemployed, cruelly fired thanks to the current administration, can be used to effect in any genre.
How about a suspense or thriller novel about the battle between the administration and the women, African Americans, Asians, the LGBTQs, and others disenfranchised by the current cruel and hate-filled policies against equity, diversity, and inclusion?
How about performing The Sound of Music at the Kennedy Center and, at the end, having the entire audience leave the theatre along with the actors?
What about a heist novel in which concerned scientists rob the Smithsonian of all its valuable artifacts and hides them until a new and more intelligent administration is voted in?
Oh, man, I’m just getting started. These ideas were off the top of my head. I’ll bet you can and will think of even better ideas. I hope you publish.
